Here’s a podcast download of Shaykh Yahya Rhodus, on Malaysia’s talk radio, discussing Imam Al-Ghazali’s Deliverance from Error. We arranged this session with BFM Night School when he was in Kuala Lumpur for Haul of Imam Al-Haddad organized by Hawi Al-Khairat (Amanah HAK).
Al-Ghazali is arguably the greatest Muslim thinker of all time. In this episode, we reflect on Deliverance from Error, his spiritual biography, whereby he details his discovery of the path to The Truth. Join us as our special guest this week, Sheikh Yahya Rhodus, takes us through this text and its relevance for contemporary times.
In 2006, the late Yasmin Ahmad, Malaysia’s famous film director, wrote a book review in the New Straits Times and blogged about it too, click here to read it. The often sold-out book was Hamza Yusuf’s commentary and translation of a poem by the same title, Purification of the Heart written by Imam al-Mawlud.
On Friday 13 September, a student of Shaykh Hamza Yusuf Hanson of Zaytuna College California, Shaykh Yahya Rhodus will be giving a talk on the same subject. Organized by Hawi Al-Khairat, Rhodus is in Malaysia for the annual symposium for the scholarship of Imam Al-Haddad (1634-1720) who he himself too wrote about the same subject 300 odd years ago.
This event will take place on Friday 13 September 2013 at KGPA @ Kelab Golf Perkhidmatan Awam in Petaling Jaya. Doors open 8.30pm. No admission fee, but do RSVP here:http://www.peacemeal.my/sept2013rsvp/.
FYI, we are working towards having this book ready for sale to those attending the event, and perhaps sell it online prior to it. All funds will be channeled to Peace Meal to assist existing and future projects.
Most recently in 2012, Yasmin Mogahed published on YouTube her talk on the same subject.
Shaykh Yahya Rhodus began his study of Islam with Shaykh Hamza Yusuf Hanson and then at Dar al-Mustafa in Tarim, Hadhramout in theology, legal theory and Arabic poetry under the likes of Habib ‘Umar binHafiz and Habib ‘Ali al-Jifri. He has a B.A. in Near Eastern Studies at the University of California, Berkeley and a M.A. in Islamic Studies at the Graduate Theological Union in Berkeley Keys to the Revival: An Analytical Study of the Architecture of Al Ghazali’s Ihya’ ‘Ulum Al-Din Center for Islamic Studies, With Honors.
